Introduction to the Tesco Non Food Standard
Aim
Tesco is committed to ensuring products produced by it’s suppliers are safe, meet legal
requirements, are of the agreed quality and that the working conditions of people at
Tesco suppliers including their Health & Safety, along with the ethics applied, meet or
exceed relevant standards.
Objective
This standard sets out the requirements to which suppliers must comply. In some
product areas there are additional requirements as detailed in codes of practice. In no
circumstance does compliance to the standard replace the need for compliance to
relevant legal standards in the country of manufacture or the intended country of sale.
Compliance to the standard is in addition to the duty held by the supplier to produce
safe and legal products. Tesco suppliers also play an important part in brand protection
and the manufacturing sites which produce Tesco products must not cause damage to
the brand reputation.
Scope
The detail contained in this standard is applicable to all primary and secondary suppliers
of non food formulated, personal care & food contact products to Tesco eg shampoo,
bleach, car wax, nappies, cotton wool or toilet tissue. Although identified as a
manufacturing standard, this document applies equally to sites packing or filling these
products.
The Standard Structure
The Sections and Layout
This standard documents Tesco requirements for Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
It is divided into sections by subject, which are then sub divided further into clauses to
help identify the detailed requirements.
Base, Medium, High, Sterile, Aspiration
The clauses within each section (35 sections) have been allocated a level of Base,
Medium, High, Sterile or Aspiration. These levels relate to the type of product, and/or
the processing area, which must comply with each clause.
Base
These requirements apply to all production facilities irrespective of the product or
process type. There may be some 'base' clauses which are not applicable in certain
industries. Where identified, these must be agreed in writing with your relevant Tesco
Technical Manager who must in turn agree with TL&T and attach to the site record on
the Tesco Technical Library. It must be remembered however that these
requirements are designed to raise standards across the industry and all exemptions will
need to be justified.
Medium
These requirements specifically apply in areas where product is exposed to potential
contamination, in addition to all of the base requirements.
High
These requirements specifically apply in areas where product is exposed to potential
contamination and where hygiene is integral to product safety, in addition to all of the
base and medium requirements.
Sterile
These requirements apply to areas that are identified as handling or processing sterile
products such as eye contact or wound dressings in addition to all the base, medium and
high requirements.
