韩国船级社（KR）成立于1960年，其宗旨是为航运、造船及其他与海事相关的工业提供可靠的技术规范和标准，以促进海上生命和财产的安全以及保护海洋环境。

韩国船级社总部位于大邱市，预计不久将转移至斧山，目前设有41所国内常驻机构，工作人员430多名，另有27个海外事务所。1988年，韩国船级社加入国际船级社协会（IACS）；1990年被伦敦保险商协会纳入船级条款，享受保险优惠待遇。目前韩国船级社已获世界40多个国家和地区政府的授权；至2006年年底，KR共拥有2000多艘入级船舶，共计3000多万总吨。

韩国船级社通过多样的分析方法和多年来的经验，已经具备了建造LNG船最尖端的技术能力。
