Introduction to the Tesco Non Food Standard
Application of Base/Medium/High/Sterile within a factory
A diagram of these requirements is below.
Base, Medium, High & Sterile can be associated with the product but linked to specific
areas within the factory.
In a site manufacturing a sterile product all requirements of the Standard (base,
medium, high & sterile) will apply, i.e. in the sterile area all base, medium, high &
sterile requirements apply.
In an open product area (work in progress before packaging), the base and medium
requirements apply
In an area where there is no open product e.g. storage areas, base requirements only apply.
Additional examples
Base = A liquid product eg household cleaning products where there is minimal
potential for product contamination.
Medium/High = A liquid product eg shampoo where the filling of the product and
dispensing of raw materials in these areas could expose the product to potential
contamination.
Sterile = A product eg contact lens solution which needs to be strictly controlled in a
clean room environment to avoid any potential contamination during filling.
If there is ambiguity as to whether an area of site is Base, Medium, High or Sterile, your
Tesco Technical Manager (TTM) will decide.
Examples of products within the scope of this standard are listed below and an
indication of the highest requirement which will normally be associated with that
product. This list is not exhaustive and if in doubt as to which level your product
belongs, please ask your TTM.
Products which are out of scope will be captured by other Tesco Standards. Please
consult with your Tesco Technical Manager if in doubt as to whether your product falls
within the scope of this standard.
Aspiration (ASPN)
Some sections have additional elements that Tesco believe will help move standards
forward within the supply base. These are not prescribed requirements but will be
viewed favourably by Tesco if implemented. Aspirations may be designed to raise
standards at base, medium or high levels e.g. clause 1.7.1 (ASPN) Control Measures,
included to raise the base level standard around pre-requisite programmes.
